Bayou Meto Double D
Passion, fanaticism, fervor. None of these adjectives even comes close to describing the zeal that Danny Pool has had for 23 years in developing Double D Duck Hunting Guide Service into the model for manipulating hot duck food and natural vegetation, to create the most unbelievable duck hunting in Arkansas. There is simply no where else like it, and it has to be seen in person to appreciate and recognize the research and work that has gone into it.
Double D Farm consists of 540 acres of former production fish farms that has been turned into duck heaven. The entirety of the farm is planted in millet, rice, or manipulated natural vegetation to provide ducks with their preferred feeds. The banks of the ponds have been planted in willow, elm, and sweet gum. Strategically planted willow clumps artfully steer the ducks right into the front door of the pits. The ponds range in size from five acres up to about twenty acres. The ponds are leveled to provide varying depths of shallow water all over the farm. Some ponds are used as rest areas and reservoirs. To put it in a nutshell, this place provides everything a puddle duck needs, and it is purposely lightly hunted so the ducks really have no reason to leave. Danny has plainly made a science of attracting ducks in their winter habitat, and no one has figured it out better than he.
Now, after 23 years of managing one of the most productive, and profitable duck hunting guide services in Arkansas, Danny and his team are retiring after this season, leaving an opportunity that has seldom been seen in Arkansas. That is the chance for new owners to enjoy one of the most phenomenal duck hunting properties in Arkansas.
Being a former production fish farm, the ideal infrastructure was already there for inexpensive and efficient water use. The farm has four 8-inch electric wells all interlinked with underground piping, and providing water to every pond on the farm. There are also two large electric re-lifts located on Bayou Meto, which pump 5,000 gpm and 2000 gpm respectively into the underground water system. There is also a large pump-off re-lift shared by four landowners to prevent Bayou Meto from flooding the farm and surrounding farmland in a major flood event.
Other features include 11 duck pits in place, 3 permanent blinds, and a dozen or more sled blinds that are used primarily to exploit day to day hunting conditions and locations that the ducks are using. The farm is being sold turn-key, including equipment such as a new Can-Am quad-trac, and other side by side UTVs.
There are two lodges on the site. The first is a newly renovated farmhouse in which the owner has invested $120,000 worth of renovations in early 2022. The main lodge is approximately 3,100 sq ft of living space. It has 11 full size beds, as well as comfortable dens, kitchen, and dining areas. A sitting area and a game room complete the lodge. It also has a huge fire pit and outdoor lounging area with a view of the rest area — a place where you can watch ducks come and go all day.
The former lodge is older, but very comfy, in the way that a duck lodge ought to be. This is where the current clientele take their meals. Commercial kitchen appliances and a large dining area, along with a large den/TV watching area, make this a favorite place to hang out. The old lodge has two bunk rooms that will sleep about 16 people. Another building on the site provides storage for decoys and other equipment, and there are plenty of dog kennels to accommodate everyone and their canines.
But the most astounding thing about Double D is its effectiveness at killing ducks. Few duck clubs in Arkansas can boast of a long-term average of over fifteen hundred ducks per year, and some years have seen significantly more than that. Approximately 30% of the harvest long-term is mallards, and pintail limits are very common. Widgeon, gadwalls, and teal make up the majority of the rest of the harvest, along with an occasional redhead or canvasback.
Located only 20 minutes from the Little Rock airport, Double D is absolutely the closest place to Little Rock or to northwest Arkansas where you can find this type of duck hunting. It is also less than five miles from the Remington Gun Club, which offers trap, skeet, and sporting clays. Lonoke is five miles east and offers some good restaurants, and handy for supplies, hunting equipment, or anything else you may need.
